DESIGNING, DEVELOPING AND PROJECT MANAGING HEALTH, SOCIAL CARE AND GRASSROOTS COMMUNITY PROJECTS ACROSS LONDON AND THE UK.

Breda is a systemic innovator in mental health, with a career dedicated to designing fairer, smarter, and more human-centred services. She has pioneered award-winning programmes across the NHS, local authorities and VCSE partners, ranging from culturally adapted talking therapies, digital platforms for people severely affected by mental illness, and personal health budgets that empower recovery. Her work has reduced inequalities, improved outcomes, and influenced national NHS policy and guidance.

With an unusual career journey, moving from architecture into ageing, wellbeing, and then mental health services more broadly, Breda approaches system change the way she approaches design: start with listening honestly, co-create with those most affected, and build structures that last. Colleagues describe her as a fantastic systems thinker, data-driven yet deeply people-focused, and the driver who turns vision into tangible reality. Breda brings optimism, energy, and clarity to the most complex challenges while always ensuring that services meet the needs of the people they exist to serve.

MANAGING MY WELLBEING ON MY SMARTPHONE

Inspired by feedback from service users who were frustrated by lack of access to their health information, a patient-held electronic health record (EHR) for people severely affected by mental illness in City and Hackney was designed and launched, empowering people to self manage their mental health recovery and physical wellbeing – the first such implementation in the UK.

PERSONAL HEALTH BUDGETS TO GET WELL AND STAY WELL

This cross-sector pilot embeds Personal Health Budgets (PHBs) into the recovery pathway for people severely affected by mental illness, developing a model that scaled beyond Section 117 aftercare to support over 2,700 patients achieve ‘what mattered to them’ on their recovery journey across 40 mental health teams in City & Hackney, Tower Hamlets and Newham.

BRINGING NHS TALKING THERAPIES TO EVERYONE

This flagship workstream was to lead on the design and scaling of culturally responsive NHS Talking Therapies, delivered through VCSE partners who were working with underserved communities in the borough. By embedding NICE-compliant therapies into these community based services and resolving digital integration with NHS datasets, uptake and recovery rates improved significantly.

PERSON-CENTRED SUPPORT FOR PEOPLE WHO HOARD

Launched in 2014, Making Room provided a therapeutic de-cluttering programme to adults across London, drawn from Breda’s own experience working with adults who hoard and compulsively collect since 2010. This model of therapeutic de-cluttering puts the person in control of the decluttering process, and supports them to realise their decluttering goals while gaining insight into their collecting.
